Lucky, born in Philadelphia in 1951, co-founded Asleep at the Wheel, winning 2 Grammy Awards. A master of multiple styles, he hosted ABC RN’s Daily Planet for 21 years. Lucky has played with legends like Eric Clapton and Willie Nelson, and is known for innovating on the pedal steel guitar.

Helen Shanahan is a Perth-based folk/pop singer-songwriter. A WAAPA graduate, she won the 2018 WAM Song of the Year and has supported artists like Tim Minchin and Jackson Browne. Her albums, including 2022’s “Canvas,” have earned critical acclaim. In 2024, she supported Peter Garrett and wrote for Vika and Linda Bull.

Dave Milroy and Lucky Oceans

David and Lucky have added their music and hilarity to many an impromptu and delightful late night soiree at Kidogo Arthouse. Now you, the public, have the chance to experience their own unique songs and stories and a joke or two.

David and Lucky have been crossing paths since the 1980s when they were both in the backing band for the Gnangara Aboriginal Country Music Festival but began performing as a duo in the 2020s, with shows at Freo Social, Kidogo, the Duke of George and, in 2025, Tasmania’s ’10 Days on the Island’ festival. This will be their debut performing together at the Ellington.

David and Lucky will take you into the zone with their expansive versions of their songs with Lucky’s improvisatory pedal steel and Dave’s jokes and provocations adding to the fun and uniqueness of this special show.

David, a Palyku man, is one of the key figures of WA’s Indigenous Art Renaissance, having been Artistic Director of Yirra Yaakin Theatre and a writer of award-winning plays, including ‘Windmill Baby’ and ‘Waltzing the Wilarra.’  Perth Festival presented his ‘Panawathi Girl’ at His Majesty’s Theatre in 2022, where it garnered 5 star reviews and won Best New Work’ in the WA Performing Arts Awards of 2023. Many of David’s beautifully crafted songs are plucked from his plays and he has been a gifted and prolific writer of songs almost since he became a professional musician in the 70s.  Like his plays, his songs take an honest but generous, humorous and unique view of the human condition.

Lucky is a Grammy-Award winning steel guitarist and was the host and programmer of ABC RN’s beloved daily music show The Daily Planet for 21 years. His songs shine with the experience of a lifetime in music as they muse on birth, death, AI, ecology and poetry.

Guitar brilliance and incandescent vocals. These exceptional performers connect and capture audiences all over the world through the power of song. It’s made even more special when it’s sung in rare Noongar language. Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse bring a fresh, modern take on ancient traditions; merging evocative sounds, natural acoustic instruments, poignant stories with that incredible, beautiful voice.

Gina is a Balladong (Noongar) daughter, covering the south west corner of Western Australia. She has connection to the Kija people of the East Kimberley through her grandmother’s line. By official records, Noongar language is critically endangered, with only a few speakers left. As well as four albums, they have released three major works; Koort for the Festival of Perth, Koorlangka: Reimagined for the inaugural Perth International Cabaret Festival and Koolbardi wer Wardong for a sell-out season for the West Australian Opera.

In February 2024 they premiered their most recent major work, Wundig wer Wilura, commissioned by the West Australian Opera, at the Festival of Perth. Currently they are working on the third instalment of their Kalyakoorl song cycle, Moort, to be released in 2025. Also in 2024 will be the first sighting (Awesome Festival – September) of

Aliwah Bardinar! a work for young people, and they will be touring the UK in October including performances and a major workshop with local Cardiff youth for the Llais Festival. Performing with the all-important blessings of Gina’s elders and community, this duo will leave you breathless!

Emily Barker is an award-winning Australian singer-songwriter. She had early success as the writer and performer of the theme to the hugely successful BBC/PBS Masterpiece crime drama Wallander starring Kenneth Branagh,and has since gone on to forge an acclaimed catalogue of releases.

Barker has announced her new album, Fragile as Humans, produced at storied English studio The Wool Hall by Luke Potashnick (Gabrielle Aplin, Jack Savoretti, Alberta Cross). It’s her first album for nearly four years, following A Dark Murmuration of Words, which Uncut called “…a kind of Australian equivalent of PJ Harvey’s Let England Shake”

Timothy Nelson

Timothy Nelson is a multi-award-winning songwriter and artist from WA, who’s career so far has already entailed a prolific, eclectic output with many bands and solo projects, such as Timothy Nelson & The Infidels, The Kill Devil Hills, Indoor Fins and High Horse, through to co-writing and collaborating with artists such as Siobhan Cotchin, and Drapht. His acclaimed 2016 solo album “Words Like Young” is finally being followed up with Debaser Tapes – an album of songs produced with Andy Lawson at his Debaser studio over the past five years. Recently, Nelson gave us a taste of the new release with the nostalgic Greenmount Hill, and now, he’s back with another single – the 70s folk-tinged Hold Your Hair. 

Short and sweet, the song is a snapshot in time, chronicling a hazy trip through the late night haunts of East Nashville. From euphoric vocal harmonies over cloudy mellotron, to its penultimate guitar solo, Nelson describes the song as “playing out like a kind of fever dream.” Which, ending abruptly with a finger click, the listener “literally snaps out”, almost as soon as it started.

To celebrate the new music feast, join Timothy Nelson at Kidogo House on August 30th for two special acoustic sets, accompanied by bass and drum machine.

Slide Summit was born out of the highly unlikely migration of two of the world’s top slide players to Perth. Sarod player Praashekh Borkar and pedal steel guitarist Lucky Oceans have won the highest music awards from their respective countries. Their repertoire covers Jazz, Blues, North African grooves, Indian Folk and Irish reels but it’s their boundless musical curiosity and desire to tell emotion filled stories in music that makes this new group truly exceptional. There’s nothing like this ensemble anywhere else in the world!

The other two members of ‘Slide Summit’ are Indian-Australian multi-instrumentalist/sound designer Tao Issaro on percussion and drum kit and Cuban-born Arvis Mena on bass. Tao has played over 2000 shows in 33 countries including at the Royal Albert Hall and the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts. Arvis, who leads popular Perth group ‘De Cuba Son,’ adds the subtlety and complexity of the Cuban rhythmic grooves that he grew up with.

 It’s not often that such an unusual musical group comes into being to explore the links between so many different styles of music. And what a boon that these 4 musicians’ light hearted natures always put the ‘Play’ into playing music! I guess it makes sense that this group ‘slid’ into being in Perth/Boorloo, where’s there’s something in the water that gives us so much exceptional musical talent.

At the age of 4 Praashekh Borkar began studying Indian Classical Music on a mini-sarod made especially for him. At 7, he began serious training from his father, Pt. Shekhar Borkar, a noted sarod player himself. He was awarded a national scholarship at the age of 10 and was soon a regular on All India Radio and won an All India Gold Medal in Music. Praashekh has recorded 6 of his own albums and has worked with AR Rahman for film projects and with Shankar Mahadevan on an album.In Perth he leads his own music school, performs with highest level international Indian musicians and sells out venues with his fusion-oriented Praaz World Music Band. He is the inventor of the E-sarod – an electric version of the classical instrument, which he plays through various guitar pedal effects. He has the rare ability to easily step outside of Indian Classical music to play other genres. Praashekh has over 26,000 followers on Instagram.

Lucky co-founded the group Asleep at the Wheel, with whom he won 2 Grammy Awards and was Nominated for another 6, the most recent in 2023. He has played with Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, Hank Marvin, Paul Kelly, Neal Finn and many others. For over two decades, he was the presenter of the Daily Planet, ABC RN’s beloved World Music national radio show. From his background in Western Swing, Lucky has expanded to play many other genres, stretching the pedal steel into new territories. He has also developed new tunings, techniques and alterations for this unique instrument. The Pedal Steel, unlike the guitar, has no frets. Notes are made by pressing a heavy metal bar down on the strings. Notes are changed by an array of pedals and levers which loosen or tighten the strings, lowering or raising them in pitch. Born out of Country Music, the Pedal Steel, with its cinematic scope, is experiencing a Renaissance in the hands of a group of players seeking to expand its scope.

The Sarod, like its sister the Sitar, is one of Indian Classical music’s favourite instruments. Both have sympathetic strings and make notes by pressing down on the strings but the Sarod has no frets so one presses down directly on a metal fingerboard. It’s ideal for the expressive sliding ornamentation of Hindustani Classical music. Praashekh plays both his E Sarod and his Classical Sarod and Lucky plays his pedal steel and an acoustic lap steel resonator guitar in the show.
